About the Artist
Ashley Otto
Born and raised in Nebraska, I moved to Ohio in 2012 and now live and work in West Virginia.
I have been drawing and painting since childhood, and I began using oil paint seriously as an adult. I currently study oil painting at the Stifel Fine Arts Center in Wheeling, West Virginia.
My work is primarily focused on realism, with a particular interest in portraiture, still life, florals, and animals. I am strongly influenced by the Old Masters, especially Caravaggio, Artemisia Gentileschi, and Vermeer, as well as later artists such as Andrew Wyeth, Gustav Klimt, and Edvard Munch. I am particularly interested in dramatic lighting, rich colour, and careful attention to detail.
I work slowly and take my time with each painting, often spending many months on a single piece. I paint primarily in oil on linen and enjoy the process of building a painting layer by layer.
My goal is to build a sustainable career as an artist and create a body of work that continues to matter to others over time.
